Trained at the Angers National Centre for Modern Dance in 1986, Valérie Castan’s career has included on-stage experiences and diverse collaborations, first as a performer and then as an assistant. Since 2012, she has provided live audio description of more than 20 choreographic performances, with her interpretation reviewed by a blind reader. Before each performance, she guides visually impaired audience members through a tactile discovery of the stage, thus offering them a physical understanding of key moments in the production, along with insight into the subsequent description of dance. She also teaches choreographic audio description methodology in various higher education programmes centred on dance and the visual arts, as well as in secondary schools. Finally, she participates in conferences organised to raise awareness of audio description.
