He was nicknamed "Robert of the Ruins," but Hubert Robert never had a noble title—he was the son of a steward. His name without a particle saved him, but we'll tell that story later, during the tour. The tour begins with a plate painted in prison, entitled La Cascade, which can be seen at the Musée de Valence, and unfolds as an audio-guided walk, from the outdoor garden to the 18th-century landscapes, via the gallery of stuffed animals: an anachronistic stroll through the real or imagined vestiges of a bygone era—dead animals, fake ancient ruins, painted landscapes with calm or raging waters, where lascivious bodies are abandoned to the grandeur of their surroundings. A past that comes back to us through the images and stories we can create.
