To my sole desire

To my sole desire conjures up the six panels of the tapestry series known as "La Dame à la licorne", featuring a young girl and a unicorn surrounded by animals and flowers - presumably an allegory of the five senses augmented by a mysterious sixth. But unicorns are also reputed to be terribly wild, allowing themselves to be approached only by young virgins.

The work therefore focuses on one of the central points in the history of European art: the representation of women's virginity, or non-virginity, since, as the Virgin Mary obliges, there has been an oscillation over the centuries between deflowering and non-deflowering, which ultimately amounts to the same thing: one is never at peace.
